What is compounding?
Compounding is the art and science of creating medication that is personalized for an individual patient. The ability to create custom medication allows compounding pharmacists to help patients with a wide variety of needs. Through a triad relationship between the prescriber, pharmacist, and patient, the three can work together to resolve unique medical issues.
Is compounding legal and safe?
Compounding has been in existence since the beginning of pharmacy and continues to be a great benefit to patients. With modern technology, quality control and expanded research, compounding has become even more advanced and safe.
The FDA states that compounded prescriptions are ethical and legal when prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a specific patient and compounded by a licensed pharmacy. The State Board of Pharmacy regulates compounding pharmacies.

Will compounds be covered under my insurance plan?
Some insurance plans may reimburse patients with a proper claim form, which can be provided by the pharmacy. While the patient is paying directly for a compounded prescription, there are insurance plans that would cover part or all of the final cost.
How does compounding benefit me?
With the consent of a physician, compounding pharmacists can adjust the strength of a medication, avoid unwanted ingredients, add flavor to a medication, change the dosage form, etc.
